What You Need To Know About Window Bird Feeders

Window bird feeders are a terrific way to be able to view those back yard birds from inside your home. Now you can get up close and personal without disturbing the birds and without having to be outside.

They are perfect for apartments, condos, and anyone who has limited outside access. And of course they go well with those other feeders when you have a nice large yard.

But what type of window feeder should you buy? There are actually two types – the style that attaches to the window and those that you place on a windowsill.

Those styles attached to a window are usually attached using glass suction cups and sometimes with Velcro. They are smaller than the windowsill feeders. Another benefit is the ability to use more than one feeder on a window which means you can encourage more birds to come visit.

Oh yes and something that needs to be mentioned – this style is squirrel resistant because they usually can’t reach the window feeder. Great for you and the birds.

The solarium feeders are very unique because they actually protrude into the house through your open window while being secured on the outside window that has been closed. Usually it simply rests in the windowsill and the adjustable side pieces make it much more flexible.

You can secure the windowsill feeders by securing the outside window with one of the tension poles that look much like a shower rod. The window can be completely shut. These usually have large seed tray areas that are great for larger number of birds. There’s a lot of capacity there.

When thinking about a window feeder you need to decide whether a solarium feeder is the right choice for you. Some people aren’t comfortable with the fact that the window has to be open all the time and justifiably so depending on where you live. It also may create a problem with some alarm systems.

Determining what size of feeder you need begins with deciding how many birds you want to arrive, how often you are able to fill the feeder, and what size your window is. The larger the windowsill the larger the feeder you can install.

Measure your window before you make any purchases so you know what will fit. Almost all online retailers post the dimensions so you can easily see what will or won’t work. Most windowsill feeders work with a certain range of windowsill sizes.

The window feeders that attach to your window usually have much more flexible mounting kits and usually work with just about any window type.

Once you find that feeder that works with your windows place it in the window and fill-er-up which will attract the birds. It’s easy to see and easy to watch the birds. You can fill it whenever it needs it and it is very aesthetically pleasing.

Once you get your feeder installed be prepared for many distractions as all those great looking birds arrive to dine. Are you ready for the show?
