Unique Birdhouses Are The One!

There is nothing quite as relaxing and enjoyable as watching the birds carry on in the back yard. All the chirping and flirting mixed with some interesting antics can provide some great entertainment. And if you want more birds then you want more unique birdhouses!

It seems these days we are all too busy to even get away to the country where the grass is green, the trees are swaying in the wind, and there are birds and other species all around you.

One simple way to bring that closeness to nature closer to home is to invite the birds to move into your back yard. You’ll be amazed at how quickly they can begin to move in if you’ve got the right houses.

Unique houses present a different perspective than standard houses. Sure the run of the mill houses can be pretty cool too but something different will just stand out a little more. Unique is all about letting your personality show!

And no matter what your décor be it rustic, country, trendy, or traditional you can find unique houses that will not only look great but add to the décor. The birds will love it!

And one of the best places to find a unique house is to check out some of the artisan sites. Many of these are actually selling third world country products which means you also support local artisans. A nice touch and so affordable!

There are some things to be aware of before buying.

1. Hinges – your bird house should have a hinged roof or side so that cleaning it annually is easily accomplished. Make sure the hinges are rust proof.
2. Drain Holes – you should have a drain hole that is a minimum of a ¼” located in the bottom of the house.
3. Ventilation Holes – drill two 5/8” ventilation holes on the sides of the house.
4. Spacing – birds are extremely territorial so there should be at least 25 feet between houses and they should face a variety of directions. Bluebirds need at least 300 feet between them.
5. Overhang – there should be a 2” overhang on the front to protect from the elements like rain, snow, and wind, as well as from predators.
6. Perches – your sparrow houses need perches. Place them strategically and place as many as desired.
7. Wood – Wood is the best material for houses and the wood should not be pressure treated as this can be poisonous to the birds.
8. Eviction – don’t be surprised if some other residents such as the squirrels or mice take up residence and leave you in a lurch. You might have to do an eviction. I know it’s tough but it’s all about the birds.
9. No Metal – Do not use tin, tin cans, or other types of metal to build houses as these can heat up and pose health risks for the birds.
10. Location – place the houses in locations that are attractive to the type of birds you are attempting to entice.

There’s a peacefulness that comes with watching these beautiful little creatures flutter around chirp up a storm as they enjoy a bath, a meal, or get busy building their nest. Why not contribute to the environment with unique birdhouses around your back yard?
