Squirrel Proof Bird Feeder

Squirrels – those cute little devils that run around the yard chattering away giving everything in their path heck – we all know who they are. They can be ever so adorable to watch and very entertaining. But the birds don’t think so and that’s why you need to use a squirrel proof bird feeder if you have squirrels in your area.

Now depending on where you live squirrels may not be a problem but chances are if you live in an area where there are trees you will have resident squirrels.

And while the squirrels can present plenty of entertainment there’s nothing quite as relaxing as watching those birds twitter and carry on in the back yard like there’s not a care in the word. Quite entertaining. But in order to enjoy the birds you are going to have to keep the squirrels out of their feed.

A squirrel proof bird feeder is the way to do just that. These feeders are designed so that the squirrels can’t get access to the seed. That means they won’t clean out the feeders and they won’t torment the birds. It also means you’ll keep other rodents like mice and rats at bay.

These rodents have a sixth sense for finding seed and if it’s accessible it won’t be long before your yard is overtaken with these nasty creatures so by ensuring the seed is not accessible they simple won’t take up residence in your yard.

There are several types of feeders on the market that are designed to keep the squirrels and rodents out of the seed. They range from simple designs to feeders that actually shock the rodent based on the weight which it recognizes as not being a bird. Of course the shock isn’t big enough to harm the animal only to discourage it.

1. Tube Feeder – are very common and when it comes to the squirrel it’s all in the perch which is weight sensitive. When a squirrel steps onto the perch it spins and the squirrel falls off. This is one of the most popular choices as it is the most affordable.

2. Double Mesh Platform Feeder – is great for al birds but it discourages the squirrels without harming them. The food is underneath a grid that the birds can easily access with their beaks but the squirrels cannot. It’s also a lot of fun watching the squirrels try so hard to reach the seed.

3. Electric Squirrel Shock Feeder – These are also sensitive to the weight of the squirrel and when the squirrel steps on it is delivered a sharp but harmless sting that discourages it. Many disagree with this method but it really is safe.

4. Roller Feeder – has two full length stations that have a transparent cover that is also weight sensitive. When the squirrel jumps onto it the barrel rolls over and the squirrel falls down.

5. Ring Loaded Feeder – looks like a breeze but the minute the weight hits the spring the dome snaps closed and when the rodent is gone it reopens. Talk about a game of cat and mouse.

6. Brome Squirrel Buster – has a cage around the seed which keeps the squirrels at bay and because the cage is weight sensitive when the squirrel steps onto the perch the shroud instantly drops over the seed so it can’t be accessed. This is a very popular choice as well.

Now that’s just 6 of the more than 100 designs that are available on the market. Choosing a feeder that can protect your bird seed won’t be that difficult at all. There are several great sites that offer excellent selections and pricing so be sure to shop around.

Online shopping provides many benefits to your local retailer with the main one being a much wider selection. Generally a store will carry a handful of styles and that’s it. You either pick from that limited stock but online you’ll have such better selection!

You might also consider setting up feed stations for the squirrels that contain nuts and things that the squirrels might enjoy. Set these up away from the bird feeders to try to keep some space. But always remember that other not so nice rodents may show up when food sources are available.

If you are going to be also placing birdhouses in your backyard then you need to make sure that they have overhangs that afford the protection from predators and pests like rodents who are notorious for stealing eggs and killing chicks.

It’s plenty of fun enjoying all kinds of creatures that stop by your yard. Mother Nature is remarkable with her wide variety of species that live harmoniously in the wild and even in your back yard. And it’s also important that you do your part to keep everyone comfortable and safe.

Using a squirrel proof bird feeder will ensure everyone is happy and you can find a great selection online at some great pricing. So why not get busy shopping?
