Tips For Your Sparrow Birdhouse

A birdhouse is a great way to improve your chances of having the birds around your home and there are different houses for different birds but here are some great tips for your sparrow birdhouse one of the most common visitors.

Birds must feel a little bit like ourselves. Our urban areas continue to grow by leaps and bonds and it seems our neighbors continue to grow closer to us. Well for your sparrows it hasn’t been much different these past few years. The pressure of development has wiped out much of their habitat. That’s why installing a sparrow birdhouse is such a great idea.

1. Hinges – your bird house should have a hinged roof or side so that cleaning it is an easy task. The hinges need to be rust proof to extend the life of the hinges.
2. Drain Holes – you need a minimum of a ¼” hole in the bottom of the house for drainage.
3. Ventilation Holes – drill two 5/8” ventilation holes on the sides of the house.
4. Spacing – birds are territorial and so you need to leave at least 25 feet between houses. For bluebirds make that 300 feet.
5. Overhang – there should be a 2” overhang on the front to protect the entrance from cats and other predators and also from the rain and wind.
6. Perches – your sparrow houses need perches.
7. Wood – use wood to build your houses or buy only wood houses. The wood should not be pressure treated as when this gets wet the vapors are poisonous.
8. Eviction – don’t be surprised if some other residents such as the squirrels or mice take up residence and leave you in a lurch. You might have to do an eviction. I know it’s tough but it’s all about the birds.
9. No Metal – Do not use tin, tin cans, or other types of metal to build houses. These materials get too hot and can actually cook the eggs. That’s a horrible thought!
10. Location – place the houses in locations that are attractive to the type of birds you are attempting to entice.
