Rather than be worried about whether your environment or fine feathered friends are safe, it is much easier to just insure that there is no lead in the paint on your birdhouse. You can usually find a tag on a new birdhouse that states that it is lead free. If you purchase it used, you may have difficulty in learning if that paint is lead or not. I suggest that if you have an older, painted birdhouse that you repaint or seal the birdhouse for safety.

2. When you decide to use painted birdhouses, you should always make sure that the birdhouse has a fresh paint job annually. This will keep your birdhouse looking in tip-top shape. You can also make sure you do not see any cracks, holes, or leaky roofs. When you repaint your birdhouses, you are given the perfect opportunity to repair any damage that may have been caused the previous year. This will let you know how those birdhouses are holding up. A good birdhouse will last many years before finishing its job. Proper maintenance will get you the longest life out of the painted birdhouses.

3. If you are repainting those worn out painted birdhouses, you should always do so in an area where the birds will not enter. And please, make sure that paint is completely dry before adding new food. You never want to paint the inside where the food is stored. This is dangerous for the birds for mny generations of birds.
