3 Cheap and Great Ideas For Creating Homemade Bird Feeders

Many people throughly enjoy birds, and they also tend to enjoy adding bird houses and bird feeders to their property. When birds learn that there is free food, and safety, offered at one location, they tend to flock to that location. That is one reason some people add new bird feeders and bird houses to their old collection. As well as being functional, bird houses are also beautiful. Bird houses tend to reflect the owner. That is why I like to make homemade bird feeders. It is fun, and it reflect me.

1. One of the easiest way to create homemade bird feeders is with a pine cone, a string, and some peanut butter. First, attach the string, leaving enough room to tie the string to a branch. Roll the pine cone in the peanut butter, and finally roll it in bird seed. This makes an excellent treat for the hungry birdies.

2. Another great idea only takes a 2-liter bottle. Wash out the 2-liter with warm water, and let dry. Make sure that the cap is on the bottle, and flip the bottle over. You want to cut three flaps where the flap part would point towards the lid. These cuts are along the sides at the fat end of th e2-liter bottle. Fold down the flaps to allow a resting place for the birds. Now, fill with seed, and hang.

3. Perhaps one of my favorite treats for birds is to get that fruit, bread, and veggies that are not edible by us, string them together sort of like a shish kabob. Then hang from a tree branch. Birds love fresh fruit and veggies. Just remember not to leave up until it is dried. When I do this at my home, I only leave it up for a week maximum.

When you want to create homemade bird feeders, you can use almost anything as the bird feeder. Be cautious with the materials you use though. You should never leave sharp edges and such that could injure the birds. I have used milk jugs, old margarine containers. You can use literally anything as a bird feeder as long as it will hold the bird seeds and let’s the birds get to the bird seed.

Also, you can use a lot of that old, stale stuff laying around your home in your kitchen as bird food. Before you throw out that old apple, or that stale bread you could use as a hockey puck, consider if it would be good for the birds outside. The birds truly appreciate your consideration, especially in the winter when it gets so cold. You may just save a bird’s life, and I can promise the bird appreciates your help.

Creating homemade bird feeders is a great way to save the environment. Not only are you feeding birds, but you can recycle some of that trash. It only takes a small effort to make a major difference.
