Make Money Building Custom Birdhouses

All of us can handle making a few extra dollars to help get ahead but finding the right opportunity can be a bit of a challenge. Why not make some extra money building custom birdhouses?

You can build and sell attractive birdhouses and feeders that are designed for specific species and starting your business will require very little outlay for equipment.

You will need some basic woodworking tools, a supply of paints and stains, some sandpaper, nails, screws, and some basic carpentry knowledge. It also helps to have a bit of knowledge about the birds.

That’s about all you’ll need. It can be a great experience that’s pleasant, fun, and yet very productive as a business. It’s an opportunity of a lifetime.

Your business starts with you learning about the birds that reside in your area. When do they nest? What size of nest do they like? What type of entry holes do they use? Do they nest in singles or groups? What height do they nest at?

If you are already a bird watcher than you’ve got the area of expertise already covered and you are ready to get busy. But if you aren’t a bird watcher not to worry. Normally you’ll be building one type of bird house at a time and so you can learn as you go.

As you study the specific birdhouse patterns you can also study that specific bird species. By the time you are ready to sell your product you’ll be able to tell your customers all about the bird that will use that house including what to feed and how to care for the house and birds.

There are all kinds of blueprints or patterns available online. If you want to keep your cash outlay to a minimal you can start by purchasing just one pattern for starters. Remember you can take that one pattern and alter it all kinds of ways. New holes, different size, different paint, or change the perches - be sure to use your creative juices.

Try to pick up scrap lumber from your local lumbar store. You can get quality pieces for a fraction of the regular price. Do not use lumbar that has been treated as it is toxic to the birds especially in confined spaces. A silicone sealer like the one Thompson’s makes is okay.

Get your work space organized. If you’ve got a shop that’s great but if not you’ll have to set up a small area where you can work in comfort. This area will have all your supplies including materials and patterns. Rearrange your space until you are comfortable with it and you can work well in it.

Making jigs for cutting out and helping you fit pieces snuggly is a great way to get a top notch product and save time. You can also create or buy stencils for decorating.

All of your bird houses should have a hinged roof so that they are easy to open and clean annually. If you don’t clean it at the end of the season the birds will not return.

There are kits available on the market for as little as $5. Don’t be fooled thinking you can make money off of these. They are generally of inferior quality with very thin wood. They are definitely not meant to last.

Don’t try to compete with the big stores. You won’t be able to sell at the same low prices they do. But what you need to do is sell on the better quality of your houses and your custom designs and colors.

Since you are building birdhouses that are specific to the species you could include an information sheet with your house to help your customer understand better.

Building custom birdhouses is a great way to make a few extra dollars and have some fun doing it!
