Custom Birdhouses - A Mini-Guide To Purchasing Custom Birdhouses
Everyone loves a beautiful, unique birdhouse. Maybe they do not have an interest in adding birdhouses to their home, or maybe their home does not have the facilities for a birdhouse, but those birdhouses always spark the imagination. While there are indeed many common birdhouses that are designed for purely functional purposes, maybe birdhouses are decked out in Elvis or Winnie the Pooh attire. There are some truly unique birdhouses found around the world. Custom birdhouses offer the opportunity to own a piece of that style for yourself.
A birdhouse is more than a pretty face
Choosing a style of custom birdhouses is not as easy as it may sound. You find a birdhouse you like, you purchase that birdhouse. Simple enough. What is so difficult with that? Well, if you are using your custom birdhouses for purely decorative purposes, then you have no problem at all. However, if you are using custom birdhouses to house actual birds, there are a few things you need to know and prepare for. Of course, most people know by simply looking at a birdhouse whether it is cute or not, but structural stability should not be ignored.
Check those seams
The first thing you should always look for when you are considering custom birdhouses is the seams. You will find some are simply glued together, some are stapled, some are nailed, and some are a mixture of the bunch. Which is better? Well, I would never suggest a custom birdhouse that has been solely glued together for a functioning feeder of birds. This can be dangerous to the birds. Glue tends to get rubbery and stretchy when it rains, then cracks when it gets hot. The elements over time will completely destroy the glue of any custom birdhouses. I suggest nails and dove-tailing for the perfect custom birdhouses.
It is all in the quantity
Believe it or not, it is really important that custom birdhouses have the carrying capacity you desire. If you plan on feeding large birds, you will need a larger carrying capacity. If you will be feeding small birds, you can do with a smaller one. I do not like to leave the birdseed in the holder for long periods of time. I am sure that the little birdies do not like birdseed that has felt the ravages of the elements. I know that birdseed goes stale and can mildew and start its own ecosystem if not properly maintained. By purchasing custom birdhouses that offer you the capacity you desire, you insure fresh food for your bird friends. This means that they will tell their friend you have the freshest birdseed around.
Where do you put that custom birdhouse
This may seem an odd point to bring up, but it is completely valid. When you want that newest custom birdhouse that just caught your eye, you should be asking yourself where will you be putting it. There is no real reason to purchase that custom birdhouse unless you have a place to set it up. You can use metal rods to support your custom birdhouses. If you find that perfect custom birdhouse, yet you cannot find a place for that birdhouse, maybe you should consider giving it as a gift. Or, as my husband loves to say, “It is time for a yard sale!”
How sturdy are the accessories on that custom birdhouse
While dried flowers may look adorable cute on that custom birdhouse, you have to remember that custom birdhouses that are used for functionality purposes see a lot of weather. If you have a lot of unnecessary additions on the birdhouse, you may find that birds do not like your hotel, or maybe that hotel won’t be so quite with streaked paint and decayed flowers on them. When you see that frilly stuff on the custom birdhouses, make sure to consider how it would look going through the dishwasher.
Let’s talk about glass
There are so many gorgeous custom birdhouses that it is often difficult to distinguish what is needed, and what is not. Sometimes, things are more than just not needed, they can be dangerous. I saw this gorgeous Victorian birdhouse/birdfeeder once that was absolutely stunning. Then I noticed that it has realistic glass windows. Yes, this is a darling feature, but I could only see my fine feathered friends dying because of ingesting broken shards of glass that I thought was beautiful. Make sure that your birdhouse does not have anything on it that is possible to ingest. I am sure the last thing you want is to murder birds with carelessness.
The truth is in the paint
Never ever purchase custom birdhouses that contain lead paint. Just like you would not allow this in your home, it should not be acceptable in your birdhouses either. Lead paint will kill the birds, the squirrels, and anything else that happens to ingest the paint. In addition, paint tends to get into the ground. This means you are adding lead paint to the environment. Making sure you know what that paint is made of will save your conscience, your fine feathered friends, and the environment.
While these are some general ideas for ways to get the most out of your custom birdhouses, there are probably many more. Be aware of all the possibilities. As a samurai warrior expects all eventualities, you too must be prepared for the worse possible scenario.
