Build Your Own Blue Jay Bird House

The Blue Jay is an interesting bird and one that’s a lot of fun to entice to move into your back yard. It is a bit of a miser burring extra nuts, grain, and acorns in any little hiding spot it can find. And if it like’s its home it will continuously return. So why not build your own blue jay bird house?

Blue jays eat a variety of fruit, as well as nuts, grains, insects, grasshoppers, caterpillars, bark, and even the occasional mouse, snail, or small fish.

This is a species that’s incredibly smart and also mischievous which makes them a great back yard resident. They can amuse you with all kinds of tricks and they love to play hide and seek as well as a host of other games. It’s also very good at imitating all kinds of sounds including other birds. So don’t be surprised if you hear the barn door squeak.

These guys are bullies when it comes to protecting their feeders and they have no problem striking out at a dog or cat and they’ve even been known to attack the top of someone’s head. Now that’s entertainment.

Mount the platforms in a tree, on the side of a house or garage overlooking empty space, in the foliage in the yard, or make sure the selection you choose allows for some protection from predators.

Building the birdhouses in pairs seems to work well. A single house requires a 6 foot 1” x 6” piece of lumber.
1. Cut a front, back, bottom, and roof from each of the 3 foot long pieces of 1” x 6”.
2. Saw the remaining piece of stock in half for the two sides. Sand smooth.
3. Cut your two sides to 8 5/8” lengths. Your miter needs to be set to 70 degrees to cut your top angle edges.
4. Set your miter saw back to 90 degrees and tilt the table to 20 degrees to cut the bevels on the front, back, and roof ends.
5. Drill a 1 ½” hole for the entrance and a ¼” hole for the perch.
6. Drill a ¼” mounting hole and a ¼” drain hole on the base.
7. Use small aluminum nails and waterproof wood glue for the assembly.
8. Mount the roof to the back using ½” to 1” brass hinges.
9. Put the perch in place and then glue so it fits snugly.
10. Finish as you like. You can stain or paint it and then decorate as you like. You can give it a country look, rustic look, traditional, or modern.

Blue jays are loud and sometimes even obnoxious. They are always protective of their turf and it can be really entertaining watching these feisty creatures and they certainly are beautiful to have around.

Start with one blue jay bird house and before you know it you’ll be filling your back yard with blue jay houses and a blue jay families. Now that’s entertainment!
