Installing Blue Bird Houses

Want to attract those beautiful bluebirds to your back yard? There’s nothing quite as rewarding as watching the young take their first flight and you can enjoy it all from your back yard just by installing some blue bird houses.

You will find three species of bluebirds in North America.
1. Mountain Bluebirds – Are found in the western mountain areas and high prairies from Alaska through to Mexico.
2. Western Bluebirds – are found throughout the western portions of the United States and the south-western portions of Mexico and Canada.
3. Eastern Bluebirds – are found throughout the eastern portions of the United States as well as through Mexico.

Bluebirds belong to the thrush family and are easy to recognize because of their magnificent coloring. They love the open space and like to sit on low perches while patiently waiting for lunch to wonder buy. They eat all kinds of bugs and insects. They also take great joy in surprising a caterpillar – one gentle swoop and lunch is served. Their favorite menu items are fruit and berries.

If you have spotted blue birds in your area it’s time to put up a bluebird house to invite them in. They generally use the houses mostly in the spring but because they are early nesters their spring actually stars around February when the whether is still cold.

Bluebirds are cavity or cave dwellers taking over holes in trees that woodpeckers have made or other openings where they can huddle. With so much of the forest being destroyed each year it becomes more difficult for these beautiful birds to find a place to nest. Your bluebird houses can greatly assist.

If you want to attract bluebirds you need to make sure that the houses you are building meet their expectations and requirements. They need to be the correct dimensions and they need to look out into the open area of your yard.

If you are putting up more than one house that’s great but you need to leave a minimum of 100 feet between the houses or they’ll see it as overcrowded and refuse to use.

Watch that the local sparrows don’t take over the houses before the blue birds get a chance to move in. If this happens you’ll have to give them their eviction notice so that you can keep things open for the bluebirds.

There are two designs they like. The traditional square bird house and the Peterson Bluebird house which has a steep sloped roof and floor. Plans for both designs are available free online.

You can paint or decorate them however you like, but I gotta tell you it seems the birds actually prefer the rather run down worn looking houses over the fancy high rent district style homes. That said if housing is at a shortage they’ll generally use either type.

Isn’t it time you had a little fun and helped the bluebirds with their nesting needs. Build your blue bird houses today and start enjoying these beautiful creatures tomorrow.
