Whether you decide to build your birdhouse from scratch or buy an already made one is up to you. If you are at all handy building one can be a lot of fun and with so many plans available online you can get busy building a hundred if you like.

If you decide to build your own there are hundreds of plans available online and the good news is many of them are free or at most very affordable. Just do a quick search for “birdhouse plans” and you will get almost one million choices on Google alone.

The simplest and least expensive type of birdhouse is the traditional style which you see all over the place but don’t feel obligated to stop there. There are birdhouse designs that even specific to the species such a bluebirds, chickadees, robins, and even doves. Not all birds will nest in all birdhouses so you’ll need to determine what birds you really want to have stay awhile.

You’ll also need to make sure you know how to keep the predators at bay. If the predators are hanging around you can bet your bird friends are not.

Decide what size of birdhouse you want, how many perches it will have, whether there will be a front and back entrance, and even what type of material it will be made from. Wow! It almost sounds like house construction doesn’t it?

We’ve all seen them – those funky old rustic birdhouses hanging in the tree but then there’s the modern day version that you can buy at any local garden center or online for a very reasonable price. Sometimes made from wood but too often made from some type of polyresin. They are certainly fancy and attractive to look at and they make great lawn art but do the birds really like them?

Well that’s debatable. Many bird advocates would claim that the birds require and want more traditional houses if you expect them to use them. However with their habitat continuously disappearing it seems they may not be quite as fussy as one might think as they can often be found enjoying one of the resin homes high up in the trees.

Whether you choose to build a birdhouse or buy one already made is not the issue. What’s most important is that you have some fun deciding on the right birdhouse for your friends. It’s like shopping for a mini home and why not have some fun with it?

If you build don’t forget that you can also have some fun decorating after. All you need is a little bit of paint and a brush. Heck your local recycling depot probably has some paint you can have for free and you can give it your own custom finish.

Birdhouse designs are as plentiful as the number of species of birds. Build them and they will come. Soon you’ll have all kinds of bird friends you can enjoy from your back yard. So what are you waiting for?
